what's simple is true
[ chapter 8 ]

on monday, sutton awoke promptly at 8 and fell back into her mass of pillows, wondering how she possibly could have waken up so early. she dragged herself out of bed and into the hallway, and noticed the bathroom door was open so she quickly ran into the bathroom, amazed that she was able to get a shower right when she woke up. living in a household of nine people was different for sutton, who was an only child, and getting used to sharing a bathroom with several other people was very different for her. she quickly jumped into the shower before the water in another bathroom began.

after she had showered, sutton wrapped a large white towel around her body and balled up her pajamas under her arm as she quickly opened the bathroom door, shunning herself for not going back to her room and grabbing some clothes before she took her shower.

“oh my god!!” she suddenly gasped as she nearly bumped into taylor who was leaning near the door frame when she opened the door. “What the heck are you doing?” she stuttered. she clutched the towel around her body and tucked her stringy blonde hair behind her ears.

“did i scare you?” he asked.

“uh, yeah,” sutton replied sarcastically.

“i’m sorry,” he continued. “i’m waiting for my turn in the shower. what are you doing? where are your clothes?”

sutton leaned against the door frame, embarassed as she gazed at him, his hair tied back in a messy low ponytail and wearing adidas running shorts and a white tee that read “quicksilver” across the front. “i woke up and didn’t hear the water running so i ran to the bathroom to get my shower. its so hard to get any warm water in this house or right in the shower in the mornings.”

“ahh,” taylor nodded. they smiled at each other for a moment before mackie came running up the stairs to their left.

“hey mackie,” they said in unison, then laughed.

“hey guys,” he said in a cute voice, and tugged at sutton’s towel. she quickly squatted in front of him. “what is today?” he anxiously asked.

sutton thought a moment and replied, “i think its monday.”

“monday?” he repeated.

“mackie monday,” she giggled and gave him a high five. “what do you want to do today?”

“wai-wait, what is mackie monday?” taylor interrupted.

mackie ran down the hall, ignoring sutton’s previous question so she stood again and in front of taylor. “when i first got here and you, ike and zac and your dad were in new york and everything, your mom went to the grocery store on monday after she dropped the girls off at karate lessons and so it was just mackie and me. we called it mackie monday, and i promised him that every monday would be his day from now on, and we’d do whatever he wanted to do.”

taylor smiled and gazed at sutton. “we’ll probably just end up sitting in front of the tv, eating cereal, but it’ll kind of be like our bonding time,” sutton said and leaned against the wall in front of the bathroom.

“that’s pretty cool of you,” taylor said. “so is tomorrow taylor tuesday?”

“i don’t know, is there a sutton saturday or sutton sunday?” she asked, pompously.

“if you want there to be,” he smiled.

suttno was silent for a moment as she looked into taylor’s blue eyes. her eyes travelled down to his lips that were slightly parted, waiting for her response. she felt her cheeks grow warm as she answered, finally. “well then, taylor. tomorrow can be taylor tuesday if you give me a sutton saturday.” sutton brushed past him, and began walking down the hallway to her bedroom.

“okay. go get ready for your date with my four year old brother,” taylor laughed as he leaned out of the bathroom doorway.

“thank you, i’ll go put on my dancing shoes,” sutton grinned as she backed into her bedroom.

taylor replied, “no, you have to save those for taylor tuesday, sutt.”

she shook her head and laughed. “go shower, taylor hanson!” she closed her door and dropped her pajamas onto the floor and fell onto her bed.

as sutton rose and began to dress, after she turned on her cd player to jewel, she thought about the relationship she had with taylor and all of the other siblings. she grinned, thankful that she was able to have such a carefree relationship with him and they could joke around about anything, but be serious at times as well. sutton pulled on a pair of gray drawstring pants and a lighter gray long sleeved shirt and sat at the edge of her bed as she pulled up her hair, remembering the night he had consoled her in the kitchen. she was surprised when she remembered that it was merely a week ago and all of the boys had only been home for a couple of weeks. sutton quickly stood and rushed out of her room in search of mackie.
