sutton looked back towards diana as a few tears formed in her eyes. “i’m sorry,” she repeated. “oh, sutton.” diana said and rose. she wandered around the table and took taylor’s empty seat next to sutton and drew sutton in a hug. “i didn’t mean to scold you. i figured if you were with taylor you would be fine. but i worry about you just as much as i normally worry about everyone else.” “i know, and i’m so sorry. i just...we didn’t mean to fall asleep. i had such a wonderful time today with taylor i didn’t really want our night to end but i thought we should get home.” diana wiped sutton’s limp hair out of her eyes. “shh, hon. Its okay. you’re home safe and sound, now. are you doing okay, sutton?” sutton quickly wiped her eyes and shrugged. “its been really hard for me, since i left my parents. “i’ve...” she blushed as she looked into her lap. “taylor has been great, like a best friend to me. he always has been. when i’m with him i feel really safe, and everything about who he was kind of slipped our minds.” “that’s wonderful, i’m glad. but i was worried about you, and you two do need to be more aware of things. is there something else that’s been bothering you?” she gently asked and squeezed sutton’s hand. “yeah, i guess there’s something that i wanted to tell you about my family, and my parents. i don’t think my mom or dad ever told you before when you guys were working this out for me to stay with you, but...” sutton slowly looked diana in the eyes and told her the story she had told taylor the previous morning, though with a little less ease and a little quicker. when she was through tears were streaming from her eyes. diana fished a kleenex from her bathrobe pocket and wiped sutton’s tears and drew her in for a large hug. “oh, sutton. shh, its okay. go ahead and cry, hon” diana said and rubbed her back. sutton dug her nose into diana’s shoulder much like she would whenever she needed to be comforted by her own mother, and even though diana wasn’t her mother, she received comfort which was what she needed. “i’m sorry,” sutton said and pulled away and dried her eyes. “i just, i just thought that you should know.” “thank you for telling me, sutton. i know that must have been hard for you to come to terms with.” diana smiled, and rubbed her arm. “are you doing okay now?” “i’m fine, i’m just still sad and upset. i don’t know whats going on with them or how they are doing, and it hurts.” “do you need to call them up, and talk to them?” diana asked. “no, no, i just think i should go to bed. i’m tired and worn out. but i appreciate it.” sutton managed to smile as she slowly stood. diana followed, and gave her another hug. “if you ever need anything, please come to me. you can tell me or walker anything and you can call your parents whenever you need to, honey.” “thank you diana, i knew you would understand.” sutton said as she and diana walked down the foyer and up the steps to the upstairs. “of course. goodnight sweetie,” diana said and turned down the right of the hallway and silently closed her door. sutton stood in the middle of the hallway for a moment, wishing she could go to taylor, hold taylor. she looked at their bedroom door which was open a crack, but instead she went to the bathroom, and solemnly to her own room.
