what's simple is true
[ chapter 26 ]

after awhile, sutton and taylor slowly dozed off, tired and worn out from their day’s activities and feeling very peaceful under the stars with each other. suddenly sutton jerked awake, and blinked her eyes a few times before she realized where she was. her fingers were still intertwined in taylor’s, and her head had been resting comfortably on his shoulder.

“oh my god...” she said as she looked around them at the dark park and her heard began to beat quickly. “taylor,” she said softly and shook his shoulders. he quickly awoke and looked up to her with tired eyes and then around them.

“oh crap, sutton.” he said and quickly sat up. “did we fall asleep?” he asked as he struggled to read the time on his watch.

“what time is it?” sutton asked impatiently.

taylor jumped to his feet and helped sutton up. “its like 1:30 in the morning. come on, we have to get home,” he said as he grabbed her hand and they began running down the hill and into the deserted road, faintly illuminated by a couple street lights.

“god taylor, we are going to get in so much trouble. do you know how worried your mom and dad are probably right now? you know how much they worry about your safety?” sutton cried as they jogged along the side of the street.

“i know, gosh sutt. i know! i'm not an idiot! i know the kind of responsiblities we have now...”

sutton let go of taylor's hand, and slowly stopped in the middle of the street. taylor quickly spun around and looked at her, kneeling in the street and rubbing her eyes.

"sutt..." he said lighty, and kneeled before her. "sutt, i'm sorry. that came out the wrong way. it was more of my fault than yours that we fell asleep..." he said, knowing his abrasive comment had hurt her.

sutton sighed, and looked past taylor. he gently touched her hands, and pulled her up. "i'm sorry," he repeated. sutton shrugged and shook her head as they began walking along the side of the street once more. she remained quiet, and slowed down their pace when they reached his street. tired from running.

“what are you going to say?” sutton asked quietly as she straightened her shirt and brushed dried grass off her pants.

“i don’t know,” taylor shook his head, as they neared his home. “let whoever is up do the talking. i hope everyone isn’t up waiting for us...”

sutton followed taylor up their long driveway and to the front door. a porch light had been left on, and they noticed a dim light inside, probably from the kitchen. taylor slowly opened the door, which had been left unlocked, and closed it after sutton had entered.

diana came rushing from around the corner and into the foyer where sutton and taylor were, and threw her arms around the two teens.

“where have you been, taylor hanson?” she cried as she embraced them. “you know your curfew, you know you need to call if you are going to be late. its almost 2 in the morning!” she cried as she released and looked them up and down.

sutton looked at taylor and they both shared relieved looks, glad that diana looked more worried and frightened than angry at them. diana began walking back to the empty kitchen table and taylor and sutton followed, and sat before her.

“i’m sorry, mom. i’m so sorry. sutton and i...we fell asleep at the park.” as soon as taylor had said it, he knew he would regret it.

“the park? taylor! someone could have come and snatched you two up, kidnapped you and i may have never seen you again. do you know what kind of situation you are in, taylor? sutton, what would i have told your parents? what were you two doing at the park so late in the night?”

“i know mom, but we’re okay. we, we didn’t mean to fall asleep. we just went over there, like at 9:30 and we were looking at the stars, and we were so worn out that i guess we kind of fell asleep.” taylor said quietly.

“worn out? worn out from what?” diana inquired.

“we just went to six fags, we were there the entire day and then we went over to the park to look at the stars.” taylor explained.

“are you two okay? did you have fun today?”

“we’re fine,” sutton spoke up and warmly smiled. “i’m sorry, diana. i feel really embarassed, ashamed that we let you down. i know it was stupid of us...”

“it was very stupid of you, and i was worried out of my mind. you two are very important to me, especially since your mother and father expect us to watch over you, sutton. you are like one of our kids now.”

sutton faintly smiled and looked into her lap. “i know. i don’t want you to not trust me. i appreciate you and love you like my parents. i’m...”

taylor patted her hand, and looked up to his mom. “i don’t want you two going out late at night anymore. i’m not grounding you, i don’t feel i need to, but from now on if you two go somewhere during the day you need to be home at least at 5pm. before it gets dark outside.”

taylor nodded, and sighed heavily. “i love you mom, i am sorry you were so scared.” he said and quickly rose from his seat and gave his mother a hug as sutton stayed at her seat.

“just go up to bed, hon. we will be talking more later, with your father.” diana said, and patted his back.

"where is he?" taylor hesitantly asked. when his father found out that sutton and he had been out until the early morning, he would be furious.

"in bed. he had a rough day today, and went to sleep early, around 9pm."

taylor nodded and looked back to the table at sutton, and she waved him off, wanting to talk to diana. “i’ll see you tomorrow, taylor. or today, i guess."

“okay. night,” taylor said and quickly jogged down the hallway and up the stairs.
