what's simple is true
[ chapter 25 ]

sutton and taylor eventually made their way to the entrance of six flags, and strolled out together, somehow sensing they were through with riding rides for the day. they walked through the crowded parking lot beside each other silently, taylor’s hands stuffed in his pockets and sutton’s crossed across her chest. taylor broke their comfortable silence a few moments later as they turned onto a two lane road to get back home.

“you cold?”

“nah,” sutton said and swung her arms at her sides. “its so pleasant out, i wish it would stay like this and not get hot.”

taylor quickly slipped his hand into sutton’s as they wandered out of the park entrance. “i know,” taylor laughed, and smiled at sutton.

“what time is it?” sutton stammered, suddenly nervous as taylor held her hand lightly.

“a little after 9,” taylor replied as he looked at his watch.

“do you think we should get back home?”

taylor shrugged. “we don’t really need to, yet, unless you’re tired of me.”

“no, i’m not tired of you,” she laughed. “will your parents be wondering where we are?”

“they know we’re together, they shouldn’t be worried. ike and zac and i are out late at night a lot when we’re home, rollerblading and out with our friends and stuff.”

“alright,” sutton grinned.

“i have somewhere we can go, too.” taylor said and quickly upped their pace. once they were back in town he led them to one of the many parks.

“where’s that?” sutton asked.

“you’ll see,” he said as he led her deep into the park that was faintly illuminated by several streetlights. he led her through the hilly park which was mostly desolated, and up one of the big, grassy hills that outlooked on the town. only did he finally release her hand as he started to climb a large, grassy hill. he looked behind himself as sutton quickly followed him up the steep hill, and looked out beyond in amazement.

“wow,” she breathed as she walked to the edge of the big hill.

“isn’t this awesome? you can see out across a lot of the town.” taylor said and sat down in the grass.

“how did you find this place?” sutton asked as she sat a couple feet in front of him and stretched her legs out in front of her.

“my dad, actually. this is one of the places he said he used to always take my mom. they used to always bring picnics out here when they were in high school and watch the sun set.”

“this would be a beautiful place to watch a sunset,” sutton commented as she looked up into the dark sky. few stars had formed yet, but the night sky was beautiful. they sat in silence for a few moments as a few stars started forming and twinkling in the sky.

taylor smiled, and quickly scooted up towards her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders as he sat directly behind her, sutton almost in his lap as he enveloped her in his arms. she hesitantly leaned back into his chest, and rested her head against his shoulder and put her arms over his. all of his actions were confusing her, but they made her feel a deep warmth inside and comforted, so she relaxed in his arms. taylor silently smiled as she leaned into him.

“did you wish upon a star?” he whispered.

“i don’t think i need to,” sutton murmured after a moment.

“you don’t?” taylor smiled.

sutton shook her head and replied, “this is so perfect and beautiful. i can’t believe i’ve never been here before; found this place.”

“i’ve only been here a couple times before...with my dad, and i came up here a couple times alone before. its such a beautiful view and area you want to share it with everyone, yet at the same time only with people close to you and you care about.”

sutton sensed herself blush, and quickly asked, “what did you do when you came here alone?”

“wrote a lot, or just lied here and thought.” taylor answered and loosened his grasp around sutton. she could sense he was getting uncomfortable, so she let him pull away and he lied back in the grass. sutton wished he wouldn’t have let go of her; she felt so complete and warm within his grasp, but she followed him and lied in the grass close to him.

“thought about what?” she smiled.

“you sure are very curious tonight,” he laughed softly.

“i’ve told you a lot about myself and my family, you can open up to me too, you know,” sutton rested her face against the grass and began to pluck blades of grass out of the ground as she waited for his answer.

“i know. i don’t know. just thought about life, music, love, what i wanted from life and what i wanted to accomplish.”

“love, taylor?” she grinned.

“yes, love, sutton,” he scoffed.

sutton continued to pluck grass from the small available area in between them. “and what do you think about love?”

“what do i think about love?” he repeated. sutton remained silent and he continued, hesitantly. “i am not sure yet. i don’t know a lot about love, i haven’t ever really come close...to loving anyone...except...” taylor’s voice trailed off and he suddenly became bashful.

“except?” sutton asked softly.

“i...i just thought about what I eventually want from love and what kind of person i want to find and spend the rest of my life with. or what kind of person I want to find like, now...” his voice trailed off again.

sutton sensed taylor didn’t really want to open up to her, so she sighed and looked up to him. “well i hope you find that type of person, whoever she is,” she said calmly. he smiled timidly at her and quickly looked away and up to the sky. sutton watched him out of the corner of her eye as his eyes scanned the dark mass above them and watched him close his eyes, and open them a moment later.

sutton rested her hands on her stomach, and searched the sky for any familiar constellation. after a few moments of lying there peacefully sutton looked back over to taylor.

“you know you can tell me things...” she said quietly.

“i know, sutt. i don’t want you to think i’m holding anything back from you; i can tell that’s what you think.”

“but you don’t feel you can open up to me?” she asked as she slowly sat up and faced taylor.

“i do, i do sutton. i can...i will...” he bent his legs in front of him and looked at his hands in his lap.

“but you haven’t. i don’t know anything thats going on in that head of yours, what you’re feeling right now or what you’re thinking.” sutton confessed.

taylor frowned. “i know... i don’t know. i guess i’ve never been that type of person before. i listen, i like to listen but I’ve never been able to be at the other end. openly confess what I’m feeling to other people. that’s why i come up here to think, to write it down. its easier that way for me, for some reason...” taylor said to his lap.

“well you just confessed a pretty important thing to me just now,” sutton commented.

taylor looked up to her and weakly smiled. “i’m very happy and content right now, here, with you. if you say i make you feel safe, well, you make me feel safe too, sutton. there’s just something about you...”

“something about me?”

“yeah...” taylor said and held out his arms and pulled sutton down to him and she took the position she was in before with her head on his shoulder. “comfortable. you’re very real, you make me feel comfortable when you’re near me,” he said and draped his arm over hers.

sutton grinned, and hooked her hand in taylor’s once again. “you do make me feel very safe. i wish sometimes you would tell me stuff, too, though. what you feel about things...”
