what's simple is true
[ chapter 6 ]

sutton woke up late the next morning, and suddenly as she heard a loud thunder clap from outside. she sat up straight in bed, and noticed that she was still in her dress from the night before and laughed, and then fell back into bed, still frightened from the sudden thunder that had awakened her. she looked over to her bedside clock that read 10:03am and groaned, wishing she wasn’t always the last one to wake up. sutton pulled herself out of bed and quickly put on her pajamas and a pair of socks, and wandered out of her room and down the hallway. she stopped at the bottom of the stairs and looked out the window as rain came pouring heavily out of the skies and a burst of lightening flashed in the distance.

in the kitchen zac was sitting at the bar, gulping down a bowl of berry berry kix as taylor looked on, amused, from across the kitchen as he leaned against a counter and sipped a glass of juice. sutton walked into the room and saw diana on the couch in the next room with avery atop her lap, watching cartoons and she smiled as she sat next to zac at the bar.

“hey,” she said simply.

zac held out his hand and sutton slapped it, acknowledging each others presence.

“why am i always the last one to wake up?” sutton asked to no one in particular as zac handed her a bowl.

“mackie’s still sleeping,” taylor commented. “i think you have this force over him or something, he’s been out cold all morning.”

sutton grinned as she poured berry berry kix into her bowl and rose to retrieve the milk from the refrigerator. “i must. you sure are up early, though. did the thunder wake you up too?”

taylor nodded. “mmm hmm. i guess we won’t be doing anything today but stuff around the house. its supposed to be storming all day.”

“ah, well.” she began to eat and turned to zac who poured more cereal into his bowl. “i thought i was the only one who liked this cereal,” she grinned.

“nah, i love this cereal.”

“zac, you love anything,” taylor commented.

sutton laughed as she nudged zac in the elbow and he nudged her back, rolled his eyes. “zac and i just have good taste,” sutton smiled. “right zac?”

“that’s right.” zac said as he and sutton finished up and dumped their milk in the sink.

“i’m going to shower,” zac said and quickly jogged down the hallway before anyone could beat him to it.

“why are you always so mean to him?” sutton asked as she slid off the stool and started out down the hallway as taylor followed her.

“i’m not mean to him,”

“yes you are,” sutton stopped and looked out the front window again. he stood next to her and said,

“no i’m not, he doesn’t take it the wrong way.”

“he looked kind of upset. maybe he just wants to be taken seriously once in awhile.”

taylor shrugged as they climbed the stairs together and went into sutton’s room. she lied on her stomach horizontally on her bed as taylor lied the same way next to her, face buried into her bed.

sutton rested her chin in her hands and said, “i’m so tired. i was tired last night, too, but i’m still exhausted for some reason.”

“maybe zac slipped something into your drink,” taylor laughed.

sutton looked at him and rolled her eyes. “geez, you. quit it,” she said and pushed him in the side and he pushed her back. “what time did you go to bed?”

“right after you left I crashed. I didn’t even put on my pajamas i was so tired.”

“you didn’t?” taylor smiled.

“i’m gonna have to take a nap today or something,” sutton said and rolled over on her back.

“i guess we did kind of talk for a long time last night,” taylor added.

sutton sat up and leaned against her pillows. “its okay, i like talking to you. it didn’t seem like we were talking for that long last night...”

“i know...” taylor’s arms and legs hung of either side of the bed and he faced sutton, his face leaned against his right arm and smiled. sutton looked down at him and smiled back at him and then rose and walked towards her door and out into the hallway. taylor quickly jumped up and followed her into mackie’s room. he was standing up in his bed, blanket in hand. sutton brushed his hair out of his eyes as taylor came and stood beside her.

“how did you know he was up?”

she shrugged and taylor continued, “i think you have some psychic connection to my four year old brother or something.”

sutton grinned and lifted Mackie out of his crib and he wrapped his arms around her neck. “wanna go see your mommy?”

he nodded and sutton went back downstairs with mackie in her arms.
